IN THE VILLAGE OF AMAGANSETT, NY
Tiina the Store’s highly curated, tightly edited selection is assembled with the unique point of view of founder Tiina Laakkonen. A showcase of beautifully crafted pieces, made by real people: makers who combine contemporary design with traditional artisanal skill. Rather than focusing on what Tiina sees as ubiquitous “fast luxury “ - a tired concept that she rejects outright - Tiina celebrates uniqueness, real value, integrity and longevity, seen in objects that become even more beautiful with age and use.
The store offers clothing, accessories, jewelry, beauty, homeware and gifts, all shown side by side. The essential everyday sits comfortably alongside the precious, the high with the low, sophisticated and beautiful items for day to day life. Tiina and her team are passionate well versed story tellers, believing the joy of acquiring something new and precious is also understanding its unique characteristics. Objects at Tiina the Store come from makers that have a unique tale to tell; each and every shirt, dress, scarf or even tea cup has a person, a maker and their special story behind it.
These include cashmere knits from Los Angeles based The Elder Statesman; clothing by Arts & Science and Visvim from Tokyo, Daniela Gregis from Bergamo and Dosa from Los Angeles; tailoring by Bergfabel from South Tyrol and Casey Casey from Paris; soft cashmere accessories and homewares from Denis Colomb, woven in Nepal; Lena Rewell’s colourful mohair blankets from Finland; hand-tailored shirts by Salvatore Piccolo from Naples; workwear by Toogood in London; leather-goods from Valextra, the historic Milanese luggage maker, and jewelry by London based Pippa Small.
Another unique characteristic of Tiina the Store is the maker visits, where collaborators who infuse their brands with strong visual elements, such as Dosa or Toogood, are showcased in a unique installation conceived together with Tiina. Here visitors to the store get to experience a deeper connection with the designer.
Tiina’s curiosity and taste has been well honed over many years during her career: first in Paris as a student at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, model and design assistant for Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel; then as fashion editor at Vogue in London; in New York as a stylist for T Magazine, Vogue Japan and Vogue China, whilst consulting for top fashion houses and leading actresses. From her native Finland, via London, Paris and New York, she settled in Amagansett in a home she built with her husband Jon.
Tiina the Store is housed in a historic building dating from the 1800’s. Cross the verandah, enter through the original store front and the low-ceilinged entrance room opens up into a gleaming white double-height space with ceramic tile floors and exposed beams, part of the newly constructed clapperboard barn, with a raised seam zinc roof built out the back in 2018. The light and airy space is furnished with bleached ash, felt and powder-coated metal mesh display furniture custom-made by Faye Toogood, which Laakkonen mixes with a Danish Montana cabinet system in Yves Klein blue, a Tapiovaara Kiki sofa covered in a Raf Simons Kvadrat striped fabric and Toogood’s signature Roly Poly chairs. Its spacious, comfortable and cosy at the same time, an environment where you can take your time. Here you will discover some of Tiina’s favourite things, chosen for the way she likes to live.
